Aqaba City: Colorful with Lots of things & activities to offer 27/12/2017

Your trip to Jordan isn’t complete if you haven’t gone to the vibrant coastal city of Aqaba.  It is located in the southernmost part of the country and at the tip of the Red Sea. It was known as Ayla during the times of the Romans when they use the city as a sea trading port.   With a land area of only 375 square kilometers, this quaint city has a lot of things to offer from historical sites to fine city dining, and outdoor adventures. A history and culture aficionado, or, a city or nature lover can definitely have the most memorable holiday in Aqada.

Here are the things that Aqaba can offer:

1. Feel the past in Aqaba Castle

Also known as Mamluk Castle or Aqaba Fort, this 16th century partially built castle served as a military site and caravanserai for traveling pilgrims to Mecca.

A caravanserai was a place where travelers could rest from a journey.  You’ll find an execution chamber, horse stables and messenger pigeon’s place inside the castle.

Go to the top and you’ll be greeted with a magnificent view of the Public Beach.

What’s more?

Getting into the castle is free of charge!

2. Take a glimpse of Jordan’s past Islamic Times at Aqaba Archeological Museum

Aqaba holds centuries old of history which dates back from the Romans in pre-biblical times, the Byzantines, and up to the 20th century during the Ottoman invasion.

Be ready to be amazed at the museum’s vast collection of artifacts from the Islamic site of Ayla (Aqaba’s ancient name) that are pieces of evidence of 7th to 12th century AD.

3. Shop at the local shops and bazaars

Bring some souvenirs home by shopping at the local shops and bazaars.  Aqaba is a duty-free zone so items here are much cheaper than the rest of Jordan. You should shop here as much as you want! There are a wide variety of items to choose from – trinkets, books, sweets, handmade pieces of jewelry, other Jordan-made products, and beauty products made from dead sea salts.

4. Swim, Snorkel, and Dive at the Red Sea

The most compelling reason why people flock to Aqada is the Red Sea.  There are several resorts around the Red Sea so choose the best one that suits your sea outing style.  You can bask in its crystal-clear water and rich marine life for a day or two.   Bring your family in for a perfect fun day of swimming and snorkeling.  You’ll see the colorful corals that bring life to the ocean floor. Take your underwater camera, dive into the deeper parts of the sea, and take photos of the breathtaking views underneath.  You can simply dive and be amazed at the beauty of nature. No wonder it is a world-class destination for scuba divers!

5. Experience Aqaba after Sunset

As much as daytime, there are varieties of activities that you can do in Aqaba when night falls.  You can start your evening by watching the lovely Red Sea sunset.   You can dine out in restaurants that serve local and international cuisines or simply go to a traditional coffee shop and taste their local coffee.  If you are a beach lover, you can have a barbeque, picnic or camp out by the beach.
