Siq Al Barid commonly known as “Little Petra”

Located 10 minute drive north of Wadi Musa. It was called as little Petra due to the similarities of the place to Petra as a small version.  Siq Al Barid which means a Cold Siq or Canyon since no sun can reach inside the canyon with about 450m long Siq with alternating narrow and open sections. It has also sites such as tombs, water channels and cisterns carved out of the rock as well as the remains of fresco on plaster.

Just like Petra, it is also built by the Nabeteans where most important activities of Beida’s history was held, such as many religious activities, including the Feast of Drink, when the king of the Nabataeans hosted celebrations and provided drinks for his guests. There is also a cave with the remains of a fresco painted by the Nabataeans that represented grape vines, which confirmed the view that Beida was the area of wine production. In the Siq Al Barid the Nabataean irrigation system, which distributed water through long channels, reservoirs carved into the rock, and dams, is evidence of the greatness of this system.

This also serves as an agricultural centre as per the Archaeologist. A suburb and resupply post for the camel caravans visiting Petra.
