Madain Saleh – Elephant Rock – Al Ula

Madain Saleh

Start the day visiting the ancient site of Madain Saleh formerly known as Hegra, located within the Al Madinah Region in the Hejaz, Saudi Arabia. The Archaeological Site is the first World Heritage property to be inscribed in Saudi Arabia. It is also the largest conserved site of the civilization of the Nabataeans south of Petra in Jordan. Discover well-preserved monumental tombs with decorated facades dating from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD, around 50 inscriptions of the pre-Nabataean period and some cave drawings. With its 111 monumental tombs, 94 of which are decorated, and water wells, the site is an outstanding example of the Nabataeans’ architectural accomplishment and hydraulic expertise.

Continue to one of Al Ula’s iconic landmark, the Elephant Rock. It is named after its uncanny resemblance to an elephant raising its trunk.

Jabal Ikmah – Dadan – Al Ula Airport

Today, visit the open air library across Al Ula valley where you will see rock inscriptions and ancient well. The inscriptions provide valuable insights into the cultural and historical aspects of the region.

Then to Dadan, an ancient archaeological site that once a thriving oasis and the capital of the Dadanite and Lihyanite kingdoms, dating back to the 6th century BCE.

• Tours on Herga and Dadan & Ikmah is a sharing tour with other travelers.
• Hotels in Saudi might not be how you expected like in some other countries. Especially in Al Ula, hotels are limited and are basic hotels managed by locals.
• Dress Code: Men and women need to dress modestly, cover shoulders and knees and avoid tight fitting clothes.
• Please pack comfortable walking shoes, warm clothes for the cooler nights and depending on season sun protection.
